HDD Hard Disk Drive

Hard Disk Drive
The first hard drives appeared more than half a century ago, and the first 100 MB drive was released in 1970, but the restriction on overall dimensions in the era of personal computers forced them to repeat all the stages of the path, starting with the ” historical “5 MB (this was both the very first IBM 350 in 1956, and the first” personal “ST-506 in 1980, only their size and weight differed by orders of magnitude).
However, this was done quickly enough-back in 1991, the drives “conquered” the mark of 1 GB (and in the already familiar 3.5 “form factor), by the end of that decade, customers were no longer surprised by the values of 20-25 GB, and then the capacity of the devices began to increase at a really rapid pace, so that in 2007 the first terabyte was released on the market.
If the same rates were maintained, 100 TB devices would already be on the shelves , and if they were reduced to the level of the 90s – still at least 25 TB, but … But in fact, even the second value remains only plans for the future, and the first one still does not even have to dream about. Not because there is no need for such devices – it’s just that the further you go, the more difficult it is to hone the technology.
The latest revolutionary innovation was the technology of perpendicular recording, but it just started to be implemented in 2007 – and the “reserves” of modernization opportunities are already, in general , exhausted.
So, if once it was normal to double the capacity every year and a half, then from 8 to 16 TB (the current maximum), the industry went all four years. At the same time, the prices of “exclusives” of maximum capacity have long been stabilized at the same level, so there is no noticeable reduction in the cost of data storage.
And in general-the minimum cost of storing a gigabyte of information is provided by models of “average” capacity, or even “below average”, which also radically distinguishes the situation from the usual one for “those who lived” in the noughties. But the explanation is very simple – modern technologies are becoming more and more expensive, so they are used only in those products where it is impossible to do without them at all.
Why are hard drives so expensive?
Because development has ceased to be intensive and has become extensive. First of all, it is aimed at increasing the capacity of a single device, which is necessary due to the constant increase in the amount of information – but this is noticeable only in the relevant areas.
There you have to increase the number of plates in the package (which is actively used to fill the cases of hard drives with helium) or “squeeze” more and more bits from the same physical plates and heads (“tile recording” and TDMR) – but for extra money. And small and medium-capacity hard drives appeared almost ten years ago and have not changed much since then – just honing the production processes allowed them to become cheaper. Despite the fact that budget PCs still safely manage one hard drive for 1-2 TB, and for NAS volumes of 4 TB are still relevant (which in fairly cheaper four-disk models still allows you to store 10 TB of data and even more) , this all allows them to feel good.
