Features
Previously, when choosing hard drives, you could be guided by the following principles:
A desktop hard drive is always faster than a laptop one with the same plate rotation speed, a newer one is faster than an older one, and a 7200 is always better than a 5400. Now only the former remains, and even then with certain reservations.
According to the test results (see the illustration), for example, WD Red is 10 TB faster than its less capacious counterpart: the speed of rotation of the plates is the same, but the “tens” are denser, the cache memory is larger, and even the helium affects. Everything seems to be as it should be. As well as the fact that the “small slow” Red is faster than the once top-end Barracuda XT of comparable capacity, despite losing in terms of rotation speed. But the fact that it will overtake not only the BarraCuda by 4 TB (with denser plates and a slightly higher rotation speed), but also the Toshiba S300 (where “everything is more” — and in general the class is different in fact) before direct testing was impossible to predict.
