The European Commission extends the abolition of customs duties and VAT

On July 23, 2020, the European Commission announced its decision to extend VAT and customs exemptions on the import of medical equipment from non-EU countries.

A temporary exemption from customs duties and VAT on the import of medical devices and protective equipment from third countries was introduced in April 2020 with the aim of helping in the fight against coronavirus. This measure covers masks and protective equipment, as well as test kits, ventilators and other medical equipment. The decision of the European Commission extends the initial period of six months by another three months.

On June 11, 2020, the Commission consulted with all Member States, as well as the UK, regarding the need for an extension, and they sent a request. The benefit will be valid continuously until October 31, 2020.
